What are the Best Locations for Skiing?
Skiing has become a truly worldwide sport. Wherever there are snow capped mountains, skiers have been looking to conquer the terrain. As such there are now resorts right throughout Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and the Americas. This has created a wealth of opportunities and locations where you can don your skis and take to the slopes.
Europe
Traditionally, the Alps has always been a hotbed of European skiing. With popular resorts in Italy, Slovenia, France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria, millions flock there each year to enjoy the deep snow and professional facilities.
Resorts such as Chamonix, Davos and St. Moritz have developed a reputation for being some of the best Europe has to offer. The slopes offer world class facilities, often hosting professional events and even the Winter Olympics.
However, Europe's skiing locations don't simply end in the Alps. Further east, you'll also find great slopes in Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzogovinia, Montenegro, Serbia and Croatia.
Scandinavia
As countries that receive more than their fair share of snow and featuring stunning mountain ranges, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and even Denmark are all great locations for anyone considering a skiing holiday. Whilst arguably not as developed as some of the resorts in Central Europe, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy challenging slopes in a fantastic region.
Lillehammer in Norway is famous for hosting the Olympics as well as world cup skiing events. The same is true of Oslo, also in Norway, whilst neighbours Sweden and Finland certainly aren't short of their own venues for some on-piste fun.
Asia
If you want to explore somewhere a little bit different and travel further afield, why not enjoy the slopes in Eastern Asia. South Korea and Japan have been building quite a reputation for the facilities they offer and the growing enthusiasm within the countries for winter sports.
As a result they offer a unique experience, including night skiing in Niseko Hirafu. This is something you simply won't find anywhere else. The resorts are also maintained to the highest standards, as you would expect from nations as focussed on hospitality as South Korea and Japan. So if you want to experience something new and exciting, Skiing in Asia comes highly recommended.
North America
Canada and the United States are famous for their fantastic slopes. Canada of course is blessed with fantastic terrain and the ideal weather conditions for a long winter season. Whistler is arguably the most famous and popular destinations for snow lovers and winter sports enthusiasts. Just north of Vancouver, it is undoubtedly one of the best skiing destinations in North America, if not the world.
However, Whistler is just one of many great spots for skiing in the U.S. and Canada. Head south a little and you'll find the American Rocky Mountains, with resorts in Colorado, Montana and Utah amongst many others. Of course, the Winter Olympics was famously held at Salt Lake City (Utah) in 2002, which has helped bring more global attention to the region.
In the North East of the U.S. you'll also find a number of exciting skiing locations, including Vermont.
South America
The Andes run along almost the entire western coast of South America. Therefore, when it comes to skiing locations, this is one of the largest and varied. You can enjoy fantastic slopes in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. Whilst it has always been a big industry for these countries, skiers have been able to enjoy a significantly improved all-round experience.
The all round experience is certainly comparable with most European and North American resorts, except you have the added interest of exploring a whole new country with its own culture and challenges.
