Canada Skiing

Heli Skiing Canada

Nestled way up North in mountains filled with trees and snow, there lays an adventure few will take in their lives. It is surely an adventure that is based on Mother Nature, that may chill you to the bone yet the rush of adrenaline that courses through your body is so intense you are beckoned back again and again.

This adventure is heli skiing Canada.

Heli Skiing at Last Frontier

In 1996, two ambitious men bought a small cluster of cabins, including a gas station and restaurant. Within a couple of years, they had completely redesigned and improved upon their purchase, and Last Frontier heli skiing was born. Located in British Columbia, the small original resort is the Bell 2 Lodge, about 220 miles Northwest of Smithers. Last Frontier's second heli skiing resort, the Ripley Creek Inn, is about 200 miles Northwest of Terrace, BC, in the small city of Stewart, adjacent from Hyder, Alaska.

Heli Skiing Conditions at Last Frontier

Skiing itself is hard. It takes a great deal of physical prowess, even on the slopes that people new to skiing call 'bunny'. Here at Last Frontier it is anything but bunny slopes. Just a few of the terrain you could face includes:

  • Moderate mountain slopes changing into steep tree skiing.
  • Glaciers
  • Wide open alpine bowls
  • Fluffy soft snow to rock hard concrete like snow

If that doesn't seem like you're bag but you might desire to join someone who would prefer to go, you can come along and stay in the cabin. Bear in mind though that this really is the wilderness, and you will be in a very secluded spot.

May You Handle Heli Skiing?

There are some questions you should answer honestly previous to attempting heli skiing. For starters, do you've got plenty of skiing experience? May you handle multi-trip days with varying conditions? Do you know how to make proper 'good' parallel turns, usually choose the blue/black runs and can keep up with friends? You've skied in more 'back-country' areas or are comfortable if the need arises for step up sideways, traverse, kick turns, or side-slip? If you said yes to all (or at least the great majority) of these, and are ready for the best thrill a person can have, then you may be ready for Last Frontier heli skiing!

Of course, you won't be left all alone in the wilderness should you be lucky enough to go. There are professional, internationally certified guides who will be there to direct you. You will be trained in using an avalanche rescue receiver, which is provided for you in case of emergencies. Additionally, you will be provided an ABS airbag system, which is made to help you remain un-buried in the unfortunate event of an avalanche during your heli skiing adventure.

With all the precautions the guides bring to you, perhaps the most impression they're going to have on you is that of their passion for the things they're doing. Heli skiing Canada isn't for everybody, but for those with adventure in their hearts who live for adrenaline; it cannot be missed!
