An Overview of Different Skiing Styles
Although the word skiing tends to evoke certain associations, it is not so much a single sport as a group thereof. Indeed, skiing is subject to a great deal of variation, what with different styles that call for particular equipment and environments. The following styles are the most famous variations, though that is not necessarily to say that they rank among the most popular such.
Alpine skiing is the typical downhill skiing that you can do at the ski pistes of ski resorts all over the world. It can be competitive or non-competitive, though if the former applies it tends to be split into the subcategories Slalom (including Giant Slalom and Super Giant Slalom) and Downhill.
Alpine freestyle skiing is a type of downhill skiing that relies on acrobatic feats for visually pleasing effects. It falls into the separate freestyle skiing category alongside Newschool Freestyle, Mogul Skiing and Freeskiing, all of which are essentially variations of the above. In freestyle skiing, skiers use jumps, rails and the like to launch them into the air in order to perform spins, flips and similar tricks. Twin tip skis are generally used so as to make it possible for tricks to be done backwards, and those who take it off-piste and go for Freeriding – which is Freestyle skiing in nature – often use fatter skis so as to be able to better stay afloat on naturally occurring powder snow.
However freestyle skiing can just as well be cross-country skiing. It refers to human-powered skiing that goes up slopes and across flat country just as often as it goes downhill. While the freestyle version calls for freestyle skiing equipment, the more traditional form requires neither specialist equipment nor a particular kind of environment. Indeed, in snowier parts of the world cross-country skiers are just as likely to be seen on the street as they are to be seen in the backcountry.
Nordic jumping, finally, is a skiing form that is sometimes referred to as ski-flying. It involves sliding down a ramp that ends in a massive jump, from which skiers attempt to go as far as they can before landing on the ground. This type of skiing is generally competitive, and tends to be done skis that are longer and wider than the average such. Moreover ski poles are not used for this skiing style, and the skier's boots are normally not attached to the ski. This is to minimize the risk of injury on landing.
Note that there are other skiing styles out there, such as Kite Skiing, Paraskiing and Dry Slope Skiing, among others. While these are as valid as the above forms, they have yet to attract much attention outside their respective spheres of popularity.

What is the difference between twin tip skis and normal all-mountain downhill skis?
I am an advanced-intermediate skier and I'm going to purchase a new pair of ski's for the upcoming season. I have not tried twin tips, but they seem very popular and also look must cooler. Besides the dual tip, is there any difference to the way they feel, or how you must ski on them?
Thanks!
I've had both and the performance difference to me was minuscule. Your probably looking to get better so trying out twin tips isn't going to hurt your skills plus I haven't really seen any skis that I would buy that aren't twin tips. (I'm not a parkrat) So pretty much if I were you I would buy the twin tips and if you don't like them you can always get skis without twins in a year or two. Might aswell give it a try eh
